#21 – Promise (I have an idea for #13 in the works, but I didn’t want to keep you waiting any longer)
“Do you have enough foodstores for
your travels?”“Danse, I -”
“Did you pick up the fusion cells I
left in your shelter? I’m unaware of any traders on the island, so
make sure you have plenty of ammunition.”“Yes, but – “
“Water – you gave me a few cans of
proper purified water on our way back from the Library. I know I
have them somewhere, just in case.”“Danse – “
“And do you have that repair kit I
made for you? Who knows what perils await you and tha- Nick, when
you ar-”Rosalind finally put her hand on
Danse’s armored chest, stopping him mid-sentence.“I have enough food for several
months, more water than I can drink in a year, plenty of ammunition,
both kits you made in case something wrecks my armor, and the vertibird signal
grenades. Nick and I will go to Far Harbor, find Kasumi, bring her
back to her family, and then we’ll be back. Easy as pie.”Danse fell silent, gazing down at
Rosalind, his eyes shadowed by his hood and his own dark thoughts.
His finger joints creaked as he gently lay his hand on Rosalind’s
cheek, his voice for her ears alone.“I don’t ask much of you, Rosalind,
but this time, I am. Make me a promise that you’ll come back to
Sanctuary in one piece.”“I – I mean of course I’ll be back,
Danse. You know that.”Danse’s hand moved to her shoulder,
tightening slightly. “Promise me, Rosie – please.”Rosalind looked at Danse, head tilted
in curiosity and confusion. After a long moment, she reached up,
gently touching Danse’s cheek.“I’ll be back in one piece – I
promise.”Hearing her words, Danse finally
relaxed, stepping back from Rosalind, his proper military shell
reforming around him.“You two should depart soon, then.
Get as much travel time in the daylight as possible.” He clomped
towards the tree in the middle of Sanctuary, a symbol of the
settlement’s resilience. Rosalind stared after him, her mind
whirling, until she shook herself and returned to her preparations.
Danse was right – she and Nick needed to leave if they were to make
good time. Only now, leaving seemed far harder than it would have
been mere moments ago.
