Continuation from RailRoad by @helloaschefire

The dark grin never reached his face, buried so deep within. He uncrossed one arm from the other as he’d watched the exchange. Seemingly absentmindedly, he rubbed the cleft of his chin with his index and middle finger as if holding an invisible gun. The look he saw on her face, unreadable by the others, gave him an insurmountable sense of gratification. Of course, he’d know that slight twitch, the smallest pivot of her foot, the way that scowl did that little thing to the corner of her eye.

Something didn’t go unnoticed, however, what it was Duncan had no idea precisely as Desdemona stopped and turned around. Duncan could see the words forming on Des’s teeth and moved quickly to put himself between her and Ashoken.

“I know it’s a lot to take in. I know you’re exhausted, let me show you where you can rest. We’ve already got a mission.” His hand was already firmly around her upper arm turning her towards the alcoves cots were assigned. “Isn’t that right, Drummer Boy?”

“Keep quiet. If the others know who I am, they will kill me for good measure. And then you’d be dead. And you don’t want that. I promise you that.” His words were full of rushed warning as he looked over his shoulder and saw Drummer Boy coming with something in hand. He left Ashoken there at the cot as he stepped an arm’s length away from her where a quiet exchange between with the occasional glances around the headquarters.

He turned around pushing something deep within an inner pocket of his duster. His eyes locked on Ashoken, intently watching even the tiniest hint of anything, yet holstering his weapons he refused to let down his guard. They needed to get out of there now. He felt every person that walked by was throwing gas on the invisible fire. He needed to put it out and the sooner, the better.

“Already heading out?” A voice cut through the air. Duncan didn’t look back but instead waved a single paper as he and Ashoken headed out to the main exit.

“I have a DeadDrop, and I figured, the best way for A5 to maybe get her mind off things was to tag along where I can answer questions she may have.” No further explanation surrendered.
